Peter Merrett trained as a Mining Engineer at the World famous Camborne School of Mines and Merrett Survey began operating in 1982, with services naturally including mining surveying. So in 2022 we are celebrating 40 years of topographical and mining survey business. Although based in the South West of England, we have conducted mining surveyor operations and other geospatial work in over 60 countries including Greenland, Australia, New Zealand, Kuwait, Algeria, France, Guinea, Liberia, Bermuda, Cameroon, Philippines and the USA to name but a few.
Our many years of experience conducting mining surveys in such a diverse range of topographies and climates means that our experienced mine surveyors can provide you with the best service no matter what kind of site you are working in.
We are proud to state that Merrett Survey was one of the first commercial mining surveying organisations to invest in GPS ( GNSS ) technology for use in our operations. As a result, we have built up a wealth of experience and knowledge in using this technology for mining survey projects.
This commitment to using the latest technology in our mine surveying operations continues to this day. Most recently, we have been applying the latest mining surveying techniques and technologies such as airborne, boat and land-based laser scanning ( LIDAR ), UAV Drones and 3D BIM modelling.
Over the years, laser scanning has matured considerably to the point where it is almost essential for surveying mining projects. At Merrett Survey we test and choose the very latest technology in the ever changing mining survey industry. LIDAR has many benefits when conducting mine surveys in the air, on the ground or underground. Our rapid, hand held scanners are a new innovation and provide surveyors the ability to walk through the mining site with the scanner in hand to create a laser point cloud, displaying the full shape of the worksite with survey-grade precision.
Our UAV drone mine surveying techniques are another way Merrett Survey employs new technology in our operations. These unmanned aerial drones provide a rapid method of surveying large mines or quarries. In addition, because they do not require a human being physically in the area, UAVs are the ideal mining surveyors for areas difficult or dangerous for workers to reach. They can now be operated underground using collision avoidance technology.
With the assistance of cutting edge technology, Merrett Survey offers a huge range of mining surveying services. Supporting Exploration, to Infrastructure, to Opencast & Underground mining surveys, measuring and 3D modelling of the process plant and more, we can provide exactly what you need to get your new project off the ground, or to make the current one more efficient.
Our Exploration survey services have provided mining survey clients with area-wide LIDAR in order to help them plan diamond drilling exploration programmes, plot geological data, compare any inferred ore body to surface features and to plan out the placement of new road, rail and powerline infrastructure. With a wealth of experience under our belts, our mining surveyors provide highly accurate measurements for any mining or quarrying project.
When it comes to opencast mines, our mining surveyors provide data on the areas and volumes mined, as well as a precise representation of the site surface. In the past we have used vehicle mounted laser scanning systems to survey extremely large mining sites, and now with UAVs a mining surveyor can carry out photogrammetric surveys and produce orthorectified, georeferenced imagery very rapidly.
In underground mines, professional mining surveying is more important than ever. With laser scanning technology we can monitor ground movement, measure development work over or underbreak, pillar spalling, stope volumes and more.
Above ground high accuracy monitoring of ground movement is important in historic mining areas – especially coal fields – and can now be achieved using satellite remote sensing.
